art is the cure

ABOUT NIKI

I'm a Washington, DC-based visual artist focusing on abstract acrylic and resin compositions inspired by women of the African Diaspora.

From painting to graphic design…it’s my home. I’m also a creative consultant. Some of my recent clients include Leading Authorities and Hyacinth’s Place in Washington, DC.

I like brunch, whiskey, soft blankets, chicken, long hugs, and music. I love to please my senses, relax with friends, indulge in my solitude, and write personal affirmations. I’m just….me out here. That means a lot of things on any given day.
I have a deep passion for women, particularly women from the African diaspora. They fuel my art and add pigment to the paint for me. I’m forever grateful.

When I was a toddler, I used to pretend to write words. I’d illustrate my “books” and my momma would staple them together to create a spine. Over time I’d move on to drawing on the walls, the floor, the cabinets, and telling her that I had no idea who was doing it. She’d sigh and clean it up. Around the age of seven I stopped feeling confident in my work. So I hid it and created in a cocoon of my bedroom. I’d nestle anything I made in a little box or folder. I didn’t want anyone to look at it for fear they’d critique pieces of my heart that I’d placed on paper and I’d be crushed. It wouldn’t be until I was in my late-twenties that I’d find the courage to show people the art I was creating.

I’m glad I fought my fears.

Some of my favorite pastimes include obsessing over my hair, curating my lipstick collection, playing guitar, cooking amazing meals that I won't eat.
